Can I start with someone I already see?
Ask the doctor you already see whether they offer this care or can refer you, meaning send you to someone who does. Describe the help you are looking for using words that feel natural to you.
What if I want an online visit?
Look for licensed telehealth care and ask how the service decides what a new patient needs. Telehealth means care at a distance; it can involve a live conversation or a later review of your answers.
As of September 2026, the state you are in for a visit determines the permission needed to treat you.
Ask who would treat you and which state licence or other permission allows them to provide that visit.

You can also look for a clinic that offers general medical care or care for weight concerns. Explain what you need help with. Ask whether the clinic offers that care and checks on your progress over time.
Use the same questions about costs, care after the visit and who would treat you.
Can a medical board find someone for me?
A state medical board is the state office that oversees doctors and keeps public records of their licences and any penalties.
Check a doctor’s name in those records; a record without penalties cannot show the quality of that doctor’s care.
The Federation of State Medical Boards publishes a directory with links to every state board.
Find your state medical boardWhat can I ask before sharing my health history?
- Who would review my health and treat me?
- How does the visit work?
- What is charged even if no medicine is prescribed?
- After a visit, how do I reach whoever is treating me?
Keep the answers beside the name you found. That gives your search something concrete to work with.
